Whole Wheat Radio |
 |
| A long established, all volunteer internet
webcast, wiki and house concert series 7 miles from downtown Talkeetna,
created and lead by Jim Kloss.
Airing all independent folk, jazz, blues and other adult genres, Whole
Wheat Radio has listeners and collaborators from all over the world who
select the playlist and keep the station vibrant. In 2007, Whole Wheat
Radio, now housed in the renovated log building known many years ago as
the Talkeetna Old Tyme Saloon, began opening its doors to community
classes, gatherings, meetings, birthday parties, etc, supported by
voluntary donations in an old toilet in the corner. You can read about
Whole Wheat Radio's local and internet missions here. |

Wild Woods Park Playground |
 |
| The Talkeetna Community Playground Project is a volunteer effort imagined by children and built
in 2008 by the community for Talkeetna and it’s visitors to enjoy for years to come. We are a non-profit organization operating as a committee of the Talkeetna Community Council.
Designed for children 2-12 years old, it was built adjacent to the library.
The "playground build" was a legendary occasion simultaneously
involving hundeds of locals. Whether you have kids or not, we recommend a
visit - it's a magical place! |

Bear
Necessities
Keeping bears wild and people safe |
 |
| The explosion in summer tourism in Talkeetna has led to an increase
in exposed garbage, attracting bears. The summer of 2001 resulted in several bears
ending up getting killed. Bear Necessities is a grass roots organization that formed to work, through education and action, to promote bear- aware human behavior in order to minimize conflict between people
and bears. |
| Melanie
Gould - Talkeetna Iditarod Dog Musher |
 |
| One of our local Talkeetna mushers who ran the Iditarod Dogsled Race each year
between 2000 to 2007, coming in 18th place in 2006. These days she's
taking a break, working as a massage therapist, and living in the hills
with her dogs. Her website contains
a lot of great photos (and a few video clips) of her relatively simple
Alaskan life with a yard full of dogs, along with racing photos. |
